Strong winds and intermittent rains are being experienced in Ilocos Norte and Batanes brought about by Typhoon Egay, according to a “24 Oras” report by Breves Bulsao on Tuesday.
Disaster response officials in the provinces said measures are ready to keep people out of harm’s way.
In Ilocos Norte, relief goods and other evacuation measures have been prepared by the local government in case there will be need for people to move out of their houses.
“Lahat naman ng LGU sa province tinututukan naman natin, pero especially sa landslide area. Nandun naman ‘yung mga equipment ng DPWH, nakaready naman to clear the road,” said Marcell Tabije of the Ilocos Norte Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.
Fishermen have also been advised to avoid sailing due to rough waters.
In Batanes, which is under Signal No. 3, is on red alert. Local officials have also asked residents to stay indoors.
The Philippine Coast Guard, along with rescue personnel and Maritime Police, are currently monitoring the effects of Egay in the areas.
“Mula pa noong Sabado, nag-umpisa tayo ng pre-disaster risk assessment, then continuous na ang information dissemination natin sa lahat para makapaghanda,” Batanes disaster management officers Ceasar Esdicul said.
Classes and work in government offices have already been suspended in Batanes as of Tuesday afternoon.
Flights have also been cancelled in Laoag International Airport, and in the airports of Basco, Batanes; Cauayan, Isabela; and Tuguegarao due to the severe weather.—Jiselle Anne Casucian/LDF, GMA Integrated News
