The Marikina City local government announced that classes in all levels in public and private schools within the city, as well as work in local government offices, are suspended on Monday, July 31, due to the opening parade and ceremonies that will be conducted for the 63rd “Palarong Pambansa” or National Games.
According to the city’s Public Information Office (PIO), the decision to cancel classes was made to encourage Marikeños to join in the celebrations for the week-long sports event.
As the host city for this year’s Palaro, Marikina City Mayor Marcelino “Marcy” Teodoro expressed his wish for the games to be both a meaningful and fun event for every citizen and guest to the city.
The PIO released a public invitation on their social media page, urging residents to witness the grand opening ceremonial activities on Monday.
Entrance to the opening at the Marikina Sports Center (MSC) is free. No ticket is required to be presented upon entry.
For the pre-opening show at around 12:30 to 1 p.m., there will be a Dragon Boat exhibition, marching band performance, and a water cannon show at the Marikina River Park.
This will be followed by the parade of athletes at 1:30 p.m. The program proper will begin at around 5 p.m.
Aside from Teodoro, Vice President Sara Duterte, who also sits as the secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd), along with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. are expected to deliver messages during the ceremony.
