Nyoy Volante Shares the Lessons That Have Guided the Sessionistas for Over 20 Years
When a music group thrives for decades, the chemistry audiences witness on stage is often built on something far deeper than rehearsals and harmonies. For the Sessionistas: one of the Philippines’ most celebrated vocal collectives, their longevity is rooted not only in musical excellence, but in genuine friendship, unwavering trust, and years of shared experiences.
As the group prepares for another highly anticipated concert Sessionistas: The Playlist happening on August 22, 2026 at the Theatre at Solaire, OPM icon Nyoy Volante opened up about the enduring bond that keeps the Sessionistas together, the emotional weight of judging Tawag ng Tanghalan, and the invaluable lessons that two decades in the music industry have taught him.
Brotherhood Built Through Time
For Nyoy, the biggest growth within the Sessionistas isn’t necessarily found in their vocals, it’s in the relationships they’ve nurtured over the years.
“Our preparation is very specific: we always rely on communication,” he shared.
Whether during rehearsals or in their ever-active group chats, conversations naturally evolve into creative ideas for their concerts. Even ordinary moments often become meaningful inspirations for the stage.
“Even when it has nothing to do with the show, ideas always come out because we’re consistently in each other’s lives. For example, we were talking about group excursions with our kids, and eventually, we decided to dedicate a part of the concert to them.”
Their closeness extends far beyond the spotlight. It’s this genuine connection that allows every performance to feel personal, not only for the audience, but for the artists themselves.
The Power of Performing with Sincerity
After more than 20 years in the industry, keeping every performance fresh could easily become a challenge. But for Nyoy, the answer has always been simple: sincerity.
“There’s no other way to keep your performances fresh but to be sincere about it,” he explained.
He believes audiences can immediately recognize an artist’s true intentions.
“Malalaman mo sa isang performer kung ang motibo niya is to give a good performance, or to look good. I wouldn’t encourage anyone to be the latter.”
According to the Acoustic Pop King, looking good on stage is merely the result of delivering an unforgettable performance. What truly matters is giving everything for the audience.
“When your goal is to genuinely give people a great show, everything else follows naturally.”
Twenty Years of Experience Worth Sharing
With a new generation of exceptionally talented Filipino artists emerging, Nyoy humbly acknowledges that many young performers possess incredible raw ability.
Still, he believes the Sessionistas offer something that cannot be learned overnight.
“The only thing we can offer is experience,” he said.
“What we can offer is what we’ve experienced through 20 years in the industry. Baka may mapulot kayo.”
For Nyoy, every concert isn’t simply a showcase of vocal excellence—it’s an opportunity to pass on lessons gathered from decades of performing, evolving, and surviving in an ever-changing music industry.
Looking Forward Together
The group’s return to the concert stage also carries a bittersweet feeling.
This time, the Sessionistas are performing without fellow member Duncan Ramos, who is currently focusing on his health. For a group accustomed to performing at full strength, Nyoy admitted that Duncan’s absence is deeply felt.
Despite the challenge, the members remain hopeful that Duncan will eventually rejoin them in future performances.
As for his own aspirations, Nyoy’s dreams remain remarkably simple.
“I wish for all of us to be able to maintain what we have right now, or if not, improve,” he reflected.
“Just to stay relevant enough for people to want to watch our shows, and to stay physically capable of giving them really good performances. I just want to always have something good to offer the audience.”
After two decades in the music industry, Nyoy Volante continues to prove that lasting success isn’t measured solely by hit songs or sold-out concerts. It’s built on sincerity, genuine relationships, and a lifelong commitment to giving audiences performances that come straight from the heart.
